Although the temperature was above freezing today, the snow covering the ground was all the reminder needed that today was the start of winter. With the wind blowing, the snow looked like waves rippling across a lake.

It has seemed like a very twisty journey to the last day of astronomical fall this year, especially after a very cold deep freeze this past weekend but at least it did get above freezing today.

A string of little chickadee were busy coming to the bird feeder as I filled it this afternoon. I suppose they were happy that my presence was scaring off the larger birds like blue-jays allowing them to get some sunflower seeds.

The new snow was sparkling in the very crisp air this afternoon, even if it was warmer than the over night low of -22 (although it might have been colder but my digital thermometer only goes to -22). The snow squeaked when walking on it to do chores so I didn’t stay out long to take many pictures as the camera battery drained quickly in the cold but the snow covered tree caught my eye with the sun peeking out behind it.

A half year can make a world of difference as instead of green grass and trees full of leaves, cattle are staring at a white world and trying to stay out out of the wind with wind chills dipping to minus forty.

With a morning starting out at minus eleven and minus 25 wind chills, it almost makes you wish that there was still a full serve gas station in the area so I wouldn’t have to get out in the cold to fill the car up with gas.

Pine trees might look “pretty” covered in white snow, but with the minus 30 wind chills, it is not much fun to to take a walk to see them so I prefer the autumn tree display instead.

There is no hiding your head in sand, or under water, trying to deny that winter is here (even if it wasn’t frozen). With temperatures falling well below zero at night and barely making it above zero during the day, the arctic frigid presence is signaling the start of winter, even if the calendar says it is still a week away.
