The rain which is melting the snow is creating some dense fog so no sunshine to be found. And even if it is above freezing, there are no flowers or butterflies to be found in January around here unless inside.

There was rain today, but it wasn’t leaving raindrops on flowers on a warm summer day. Instead the rain polished the driveway back to ice as the rain melted the snow which was covering the ice layer.

With the sun out for part of day and temperatures in the 30s, it was a nice winter day to take a hike through the woods if you had snowshoes, otherwise your foot would sink in or slide off the path with the wet snow.

Some of the snow and ice was melting today since the temperature was above freezing for a while today, but it wasn’t warm enough to create any streams of running water across my lawn. And walking outside in the sunshine was a little tricky as the wet snow packed into ice under my feet. Walking along this stream and viewing the small rapids and falls is fun in the summer but could be a little treacherous in slippery snow like today.

With the ice and snow overnight coating everything, it definitely looked like winter this morning. The storm system left a lot of ice behind which closed most schools today.

With the temperature climbing into the teens after lunch, my cats enjoyed the warmer conditions to play in the snow. Trouble, my male, was the great hunter as he tried to stomp on the mouse under the snow, but the ‘fearless’ male jumped back whenever the mouse squeaked and so the mouse didn’t have anything to worry about.

The chickadees were busy coming to the bird feeders on this cold day, but in addition to the sunflower seeds, they were lined up at the suet feeders too.

The sun was out bright today, reflecting off the new coating of snow but as most typical clear January days, it was a cold one so not as pleasant hiking day. A July hike through a field of summer wildflowers sounds like a better option to me.
