Approaching a barn, with a cat at your feet, is bound to bring the barn swallows swooping out to scare you and the cat away, especially when they are nesting. So not only to you have to watch your feet so you don’t step on the cat, you have to duck the swooping bird and watch what you are standing under (since what goes in, must come out in a smelly form).

The dry days this week have farmers scrambling to get field work done, including cutting and baling hay, before another rainy week starts tomorrow afternoon. And the haying method has changed over the years and baling large round bales is so different than the little hay bales that I had to stack on a wagon behind a square baler.

On these warmer days, it doesn’t take long for flowers to open and fade, like the irises. And some of the wild roses have open and dropped petals to ground already, their full glory lasting for only a glimpse of time.

A sign that summer is approaching in the north, is when the wild roses begin to start to open up and those blossoms add more pink to the road ditches along with the wild geraniums.

Throughout the yard, insects like butterflies, were flying around on this sunny day and down by the pond, dragonflies were darting from spot to spot.

I must have a deer that is attracted to yellow since earlier this spring, I had lost a yellow daffodil. It wasn’t eaten, just beheaded instead. And now my yellow and maroon irises are being eaten – which is the first time I have noticed that they have bothered with irises.

This weekend was Wisconsin’s Free Fishing and Free State Park event so many parks and fishing spots were filled with extra people. And some wandered into the water and cooled off in the falls as they enjoyed the warmer temperatures.

On this warm weekend day, some visitors to the Dalles of the St. Croix River area may have been doing some rock climbing in the deep basalt gorge, which has walls as high as 250 feet above the water. The rock formation in the center looks like the toy robot in the “Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots” old game that originally came out in 1964.

My body was not used to today’s warm temperature but I know others probably enjoyed the warm sunshine for outdoor activities like fishing and boating.

The bleeding hearts lasted most of May but have mostly faded now that June has arrived. Other flowers were enjoying the rare sunshine and warm temperatures.
