The poor pumpkins this Halloween needed a coat or to find their way inside to prevent from freezing. It was chilly for the little trick and treaters too as the saying is that Halloween costumes need to be made to fit over a snowsuit.

My bird feeder had less activity after the summer birds left but today the activity has increased with nuthatches, chickadees, goldfinches and woodpeckers making frequent visits on this cold day. And some goldfinches, who have already lost their bright yellow summer colors, are also feeding on the black-eyed susan seed heads.

The ground was wet today, where the snow had melted but many areas on my lawn still had snow covering the ground. And wet conditions were not accompanied by a rainbow in the sky but instead it was a dark and dreary Sunday in late October.

With the last few windy days and snow still on the ground this morning, the season of autumn color viewing is coming to a quick end, although I did see one red tree yet today that looked pretty surrounded by a white ground. And instead of a walk in the freezing temperature, a drive in the car with the heat on, would have felt better to view the few remaining areas with autumn color.
Autumn Coming to the End
It seems like Halloween came early this year and it wasn’t a treat but a trick with the snow falling this morning and throughout the whole day. And the wet snow is always tricky and I was a victim of the “trick” snow and slipped and fell when trying to walk down a slope. I was rather wet and cold by the time I stopped sliding down the hill (without a toboggan) and was able to get off the ground.

The old log building doesn’t look very fancy but with a nice fire going in the fireplace, it would feel cozy against the chilly wet and snowy weather that some will experience tonight and tomorrow.

With the autumn on the tail end of the leaf peeping season, you will find more leaves on the ground than on the tree limbs except for a few tree types like the oaks. Most of colorful maples leaves have settled on the ground for the long winter nap.

The leaves were not the only thing blowing in the very gusty winds today as snowflakes were also flying though the air. Even though the winds today stripped many leaves from the trees, it also blew some of the fallen leaves off the lawn so less raking for me to do.

I saw a bunch of bluebirds gathering together, probably getting ready to head south, which they better do soon if they don’t want to see snowflakes.

The sky did manage to clear in the afternoon, allowing the sun to shine on the leaves, although many trees have lost most of their leaves from the strong winds over the last few days.
