The robins definitely got their tails snowed on again since the ground was covered in that cold white stuff this morning. But by noon, the snow had melted although the cloudy day kept the temperatures colder. I still have only found two little blossoms open in the woods even though trillium leaves are poking up but the bloodroots are absent.  I did find a lot of yellow trout lily (or adder’s tongue) leaves, but not a single pretty yellow blossom open.

A northern flicker was on the side of the road this evening, and while they nest in trees, they spend a lot of time on the ground digging for ants and beetles with their slightly curved bill. The northern flickers in the eastern part of the United States will have yellow on the underside of the wings, whereas red is seen in the western part.

Two little hepatica blossoms emerged but they were closed in the late afternoon when the clouds rolled in. The spring peepers were making their cheerful singing and a frog jumped into the pond, but I haven’t seen any tree frogs yet. Although maybe tomorrow it will be warm enough to release my house guest tree frog back to the great outdoors.
