Some of the kittens in the barn haven’t become friendly pests yet and they keep their distance as they keep a sharp eye on my movements. This kitten watches me with two different eye colors, one lighter and one darker, as it perches in a tub.

As the oats begin to turn to its yellow color, combines will enter fields to harvest the crop although in some fields, a different type of horse power will be used to pull a grain binder instead. The small bundles are often made into stacks in the field to dry before the threshing begins.

The months during the summer means eating watermelons, roasting marshmallows at a campfire, going to the fair, picking vegetables from the garden, family picnics, and eating corn on the cob. And this girl was enjoying her cob of corn at the fair sitting across from the miniature horses.

Kids were having fun at the fair today, both the two-legged and four-legged kids. The kid goats like to climb up on everything including gates, feed pans and boxes and king of the hill is a favorite pastime.

Some of the exhibits at the fair are a bit noisier than others, especially when a bunch of roosters get crowing all at the same time. And this guy doesn’t look too thrilled to be at the fair either.
Feathers at the Fair
Various sounds and smells can be found during summer weeks at county fairs, from the squeals emitting from the carnival rides or from the livestock barns plus the aroma of fair foods. At my local county fair, various judging occurred today including sheep and goats, and these critters are taking an earned rest afterwards.

The Goldenrod Crab Spider could pick either white or yellow blossoms in this patch of wildflowers for its hunting ground.
Yellow and White
My face encountered several spider webs while I was mowing lawn today but not all spiders build webs as some just lie in wait for lunch to wander into their hunting range. The Goldenrod Crab Spider will their color to yellow or white, depending on which flower they are hunting so they are often on daisies, sunflowers, and goldenrod. These spiders change color by secreting a liquid yellow pigment into the outer cell layer of the body but the process is not a quick change as it take 10 to 25 days to go from white to yellow but the opposite color change takes about six days. Since the daises are fading as summer rolls on, I imagine most are changing to yellow to match the later summer flowers.
Waiting to Attack
The grass in the ditches have grown tall in the hot and wet summer, which help hide the deer and other critters waiting to run out in front the of car, but the grass stems look pretty in the rays of the setting sun.
