The sun was out but it was deceiving pretty scene as it was another cold winter day so not a fun day to play in the snow.

Today my cats were waiting outside some mouse tunnels in the snow and they probably heard some extra squeaks since it was very cold and the snow was “squeaking” when stepped on. On warmer days, the pressure applied to the snow when stepped on will melt and lubricate the snow crystals as they pass each together. But on cold days, the snow crystals break and crash together causing the squeak sound although the snow I stepped on probably screamed bloody murder as they shattered.

The sunshine today was rather deceiving with the temperature below zero and summer green grass and bright flowers are nowhere to be seen for months yet. Although the orange hawkweed is a very invasive plant that is native to Europe.

The wind has created a lot of snow drifts and wave patterns in open fields, but in more protected areas, some snow is still clinging to the pine needles.

The tree limbs were coated with new snow this morning but it might not remain long on the branches with the wind blowing hard.

There is a different type of white on the shore of this beach during the winter and temperatures are lower than summer. But the temperature today, just at freezing, will be 50 degrees warmer if the predicted -20 happens this weekend.

At sunrise today, Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow so the legends says six more weeks of winter. But Wisconsin’s Jimmy the Groundhog didn’t see his shadow so warmer weather is around the corner. Other than Jimmy must not have heard about the deep freeze coming later this week. And if they used sunset instead of sunrise, then Jimmy saw his shadow too. But either way, if winter was only six more weeks it would better than several more months.

It may be the start of a new month, but it is still too early to find any flowers blooming outside. And tomorrow the groundhog will tell us how soon we might see flowers peeking up through the snow.
