The fall flowers are catching some sunshine before the colder weather returns. Yellow Toadflax or Butter-and-Eggs is another invasive species native to Europe, Siberia and Central Asia which has spread and common now in North America.

Most of the summer birds made their retreat south before the freezing temperatures this week, but the year-around birds are still hunting for food like this Downy Woodpecker checking out the holes in the tree for sap and insects trapped in the sap.

Although it was a chilly day when I was at the beach watching the white waves roll in, it was better than seeing the white frost coating the surfaces this morning.

At least the white I spotted on the beach last week was an interesting rock and not frost but there is a freeze warning out tonight so there could be that white frost again in the morning.

Although there was some light rain today, I didn’t see a rainbow but there was one earlier this week on the shore of Lake Superior.

A group of immature Horned Larks were scattered on a playground lawn earlier this week. I didn’t spot an adult male to see the hornlike feathers that gives the bird its name.

The calendar states that autumn starts today and the trees seem to have consulted the calendar too as the leaves are changing colors.

With the change of the weather and the temperature barely reaching 60 degrees and the low in the 40s, I think these tree frogs are discussing whether it is time to start thinking about hibernation (or catching a ride south for the winter).
