Finding unique and interesting pieces of driftwood on a beach provides fun entertainment as I look for the sea monster in each piece. In the winter, spotting ice monsters is fun too, but it is a chilly and colder activity.

That dang rodent saw his shadow this morning so will be a long winter. And after another full day with below zero wind chills, I wanted a shorter winter. Although Jimmy the Groundhog in the southern part of the state didn’t see his shadow so Jimmy will have an earlier spring, but then he lives farther south.

The wind was whipping the snow around making it slither across the road and adding ice crystals in the air. By evening some clouds were forming as the sun was setting over an old farmstead with a silo on the first day of February.

When I was on the road this morning, there were pockets of light frost on the trees, although not the heavy or real pointy white stuff, but some frost form since the night wasn’t so frigid finally.

By Sunday afternoon, the temperature was in the 20s which had the critters out and about more. The deer were busy wandering around the house plus the smaller furry critters were making more tracks in the snow too. Even the cats stayed outside longer in the hazy sunshine.

With the recent winds blowing the ice away from shore, the sunrise pink color was able to reflect off the water this morning on the south shore of Lake Superior.

This Hereford bull needed his curly warm coat this morning when the temperatures were near -20 again. He has the same look on his face as some of the rest of us wondering when the sub-zero temps will end.

Today I saw white rolling across the landscape although it wasn’t white caps from waves but snow blowing across the road from the strong winds and a new coating of snow. The birds lined up at my bird feeders today were mostly purple finch and not any sea gulls from this beach scene.

This woodpile might not last long when the temperature was -24 degree this morning and more sub-zero nights in the forecast. The wood stoves and furnaces likely consumed more wood pieces to keep the building warm.
