The Horton Covered Bridge spans 55 feet across the Amnicon River just at the start of the fifteen foot drop of the Lower Amnicon Falls.

The last time I visited the Upper Amnicon Falls in January, it was an ice coated column with the water running behind the ice formation, but today the ice is gone. The flow level is low for springtime, but this year there wasn’t much snow pack to melt this season.

The different varieties of spring wildflowers are continue to appear after a late start. The wild geranium, which has other names including cranesbill, are displaying their rose-pink-lavender colors in the woods and road ditches. The name cranesbill comes from after the plant is done blooming and the fruit capsule with five basal cells and a long central beak-like column like a crane’s head.

Spotting yellow blossoms in a wet area, I assumed it would be marsh marigolds, but instead these poor dandelions having very wet feet as the wet spring continues.

The apple blossoms are winding down for the season although some later varieties still have blossoms for the house wren to enjoy the scent.

My deer ate one patch of three trilliums, but they missed these three great white trillium at least for today. Although I suspect they will be eaten soon as the deer really like this kind of trillium, but they leave the nodding trilliums alone. The repeated grazing by the deer cause the blossoms to be smaller each year or even kill the plants.

During the heavy rains, the marsh marigolds should have been renamed lake marigolds or river marigolds, but after a few drier days, the yellow blooms in the ditches back to more normal conditions.

As people celebrated Mother’s Day, this female wood duck was very upset by the noise from the neighbor’s tractor working in the field next to my pond. Instead of sitting on the eggs, she kept getting up in case she had to flee from the unexpected tractor noise.
