Winter continued with a dusting of snow this morning before the skies cleared just before the day ended and more snow is in the forecast for tomorrow.

The dawn arrived in a very white color as the trees were covered in thick hoarfrost. After a few hours, when the sun was trying to break through the clouds, the wind picked and created a whiteout from all the frost falling off the trees.

The Snow Moon did bring a heavy layer of that white stuff and as the sun set on the new snow, the moon rose again to brighten the white ground as night fell.

As the sun was setting this evening, the eastern sky had a pink hue but the warmer looking horizon was deceiving as the wind chill was in the single digits. The “Snow Moon” tonight has a very fitting name with the approaching snow storm which might drop a half foot of those froze flakes.

Many start their getaway weekend on Friday night, especially if traveling and may need lodging, although their motel choice may not include the “Bossie Mootel” as that one caters to four legged cows instead.

I think the other critters are upset that the groundhog saw his shadow and they are sick of winter too as a squirrel and rabbit come up to my basement door at the same time today. I’m not sure if the rabbit was planning on eating the plant inside but the squirrel was probably looking for more bird seed.

When the rodent gave his forecast on Groundhog’s Day, many figure it is the midpoint of winter but this year, halfway point between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox actually occurred today instead. And Wisconsin’s groundhog Jimmy predicted six more weeks of winter. It would be nice if winter was really over in six weeks so we could see some spring wildflowers when the calendar says it is spring.

The tree looks like it is decorated with Christmas red balls, but instead a few apples have managed to hang on late into winter although they have been frozen for many days.
