The trees were decorated in white again making a pretty winter scene but clearing the ten inches of that ‘pretty’ stuff off the driveway wasn’t so fun, especially when more snow is coming tomorrow.

The snow started this afternoon and at times it was very heavy which made it hard to see trees just 100 feet away. With all the snow that piled up throughout the day, it will take some time to clear the snow off the driveway since the early spring the rodent predicted hasn’t made its appearance yet.

I had to “play” with ice today since my cement was an ice rink and my driveway wasn’t in much better shape. It even took some pounding on the mailbox to get the door open which was coated in ice. I prefer to enjoy ice on other landscapes than my driveway, like the ice formations on the shore of Lake Superior.

There was moisture in the air today, but it was too warm for hoarfrost with temperatures above freezing which caused snow to melt and kept the day in fog.

According to Jimmy the Groundhog, Wisconsin’s official weather forecasting rodent, spring will come early which is good news after this week’s arctic blast. But Jimmy probably doesn’t appreciate getting tossed out of bed to make his prediction at sunrise especially if he stayed up late partying on Friday night. He did bite the ear of the mayor in 2015 so he must have been crabbier that year.

By noon today, the temperature rose to 7 above zero so people ventured out again to resume activities and even warm enough for ice cream for dessert.

The last day of January ended on a cold note with another morning at -32 degrees and still below zero as the day ended. But with less wind, the wind chills weren’t as extreme but it will be nice when it gets above freezing.

Old Man Winter definitely has his teeth biting into the Midwest with the -60 wind chills overnight and hasn’t loosen his grip today either.

This afternoon’s wind chills were colder than the day I hike miles across Lake Superior to view the ice formations even though it was a cold day too where some of the ice was turning blue. I might be a little wimpier in my older years as I don’t think I would have tried the walk on a day as cold as it was today or will be tomorrow even to see something so interesting.

The snow overnight and this morning caused most of the area schools to close because of the weather so many some of the kids enjoyed the new snow before the temperature makes its plunge tonight.
