The setting of the sun ends the first weekend of deer hunting, but hunt continues through the week until next Sunday.
Hunt Over for the Day
Six months can make a big difference. In June, the grass was green with trees that were full of leaves and the whitetail deer males still had velvet on their antlers. Now on this cold day, the trees are bare with snow on the ground and the woods are fill with hunters trying to shoot the deer which calmly stood in my yard earlier in the year.
The Hunt is On
The last couple of days the birds have been singing more, maybe since the temperature was above freezing. But one of those singing birds was the killdeer who hasn’t headed south yet. They are one of the early birds to arrive in the spring and I wonder if they need their tails snowed on x number of times before they decide it is winter and need to leave. The saying about the robins getting snowed on three times before spring is finally here apparently isn’t the same in reverse for the killdeer as they have been snowed on more than three times and it is snowing again tonight.
Delayed Departure
The sunshine was out today and the temperature finally made it above freezing after a long, cold week. But with the wind chill still below freezing, you might want to keep your feet and legs dry if strolling on a beach. And on a day when some random larger waves roll in, it is easier to get a surprised feet soaking.
Beach Sweeping Waves
One hundred years ago, World War I formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, when the Armistice with Germany went into effect. Veterans Day grew from Armistice Day, which pays tribute to all American veterans who served their country honorably during war or peacetime.
Remembering on Veterans Day
My hardy little violas were not hardy enough to survive the near zero temperature overnight so they looked rather sad and wimpy. And so with the last of my flowers gone for the season, it probably will be another six months before snow glories like these can emerge when the snow melts in the spring.
