There was a few trees turning color in August, and even more trees showing red now that it is the first day of autumn.

It looks like the hummingbirds have join the ranks of the other summer birds that have headed south. It has been a couple of days since I had a lone hummingbird tanking up on sugar water before making the long trip.

The other day I rescued a butterfly that was trapped in the garage as it was flying against the window glass instead of going out through the open door. I didn’t recognize the butterfly and I didn’t stop to take a picture as I didn’t want it to damage its wings while hitting the glass. This Milbert’s Tortoiseshell has a bit of damage to one of its wings, but I don’t know what caused the damage as it wasn’t the butterfly rescued.

This walkingstick stood out against a white door, otherwise they are hard to spot. Although they have great camouflage of a twig, birds and other predators can spot them easier than I can. Walkingsticks graze on the leaves of a variety of deciduous forest trees.

I had extra help picking apples this afternoon, although the furry four-legged critter was more of a hindrance than helpful. But the kitten didn’t care to climb as high as I was and he preferred playing with a grasshopper instead.

There seems to be a bumper crop of acorns this year and they sound more like baseballs as they drop from the high branches and crash to the ground. My path to the pond felt like walking on marbles.
