The sun managed to peek out this afternoon, lighting up the new snow and brightening the trees including the pine cones still hanging on.

The cloudy, below freezing winter day has me wishing for a hint of warmer times and adventures like a trip to a waterfall, like to Bond Falls in Upper Michigan.

The new coating of snow allows me to see tracks of critters which visit my yard during the night or ones that sneaked through by during the day. Sometimes I happen to spot them out the window like this turkey.

I haven’t been very fond of the ice which have covered my driveway this past week, but people do flock to see ice caves and other ice formations as they hike miles over frozen Lake Superior. But with the January thaw, there is open water by the sea caves so no walking out there to see the ice formations right now.

The icy roads and driveways were melting where sand has been spread on them, but I don’t have sand on mine so the only spots that were melting is where oak leaves have landed on the snow and ice.

The rain which is melting the snow is creating some dense fog so no sunshine to be found. And even if it is above freezing, there are no flowers or butterflies to be found in January around here unless inside.

There was rain today, but it wasn’t leaving raindrops on flowers on a warm summer day. Instead the rain polished the driveway back to ice as the rain melted the snow which was covering the ice layer.

With the sun out for part of day and temperatures in the 30s, it was a nice winter day to take a hike through the woods if you had snowshoes, otherwise your foot would sink in or slide off the path with the wet snow.

Some of the snow and ice was melting today since the temperature was above freezing for a while today, but it wasn’t warm enough to create any streams of running water across my lawn. And walking outside in the sunshine was a little tricky as the wet snow packed into ice under my feet. Walking along this stream and viewing the small rapids and falls is fun in the summer but could be a little treacherous in slippery snow like today.
