Some people are more adventurous than I am and will hike the frozen trail back (after the snowy forest roads) to see this waterfall in the winter when it creates a pretty ice formation. I prefer the 1.2 mile hike in the summer when it is warmer than subzero temperatures to see the seventy foot falls, including this last bend for the final drop.

The temperature overnight was colder than predicted so the birds have been busy coming to the feeders this morning to get some food to burn to stay warm. Feathers, specialized scales on legs and feet, and fat reserves help birds survive the cold temperatures. They will also fluff feathers to create air pockets, catch some sun on clear days, huddle together while roosting and even shiver to generate more body heat. But even with all these adaptations to stay warm, some birds will still succumb to frigid temperatures during severe winters.

I think St. Francis needs to hand out blankets and stocking caps to the critters on this below zero day to help them stay warm.

On a January day where the high doesn’t reach zero, it is easy to dream about a warm July day instead, which could include time on the water or hiking around the trails on the rocks. The potholes and other natural features make Interstate Park an interesting place to explore.

The winds today are blowing in extra cold temperatures across the snow covered ground. I rather see a gentle breeze blowing across the lake on a warmer day instead.

New white is covering the ground again today, although it is from snow and not summertime white daisies. Daisies always remind me of summer, which is not on the horizon in the near future.

There was some leaves falling today, but not during warmer autumn time, but some of the remaining oak leaves are getting blown off mixed in with the snow falling. Autumn, like spring, are very short seasons compared to winter.
