It was another warm day, so this photographer probably didn’t complain too much when a rogue wave soaked her boots and pant legs as she was taking pictures.
Catching a Wave
As summer fades into autumn, a few patches of fireweed still had some blossoms, which is good as some people believe when the last blooms open on the top of the stalks, summer is over and I’m not ready for winter yet. The blooms begin to open from the bottom and since the fruit matures quickly, the fruit, blossoms and buds can appear at the same time on the same plant.
Fireweed By River
Earlier this week, the winds were in the right direction for bird migration and an estimated 8.1 million birds cross over my county in one night. And while those birds flying at an average of 46 mph at 2,700 feet were from farther north, my summer birds are leaving too. And since I didn’t scare away my green heron out of my pond when I mowed this week, the tadpoles may be safe from the hungry heron if it migrated south. One afternoon, I watched the green heron snatch a dozen tadpoles so I don’t know if it was going to feed some young chicks or it was just a big snack getting ready for the migration.
Green Heron Hunting
It was interesting watching two small dogs at the beach last week. One dog didn’t go near the water and didn’t like the sand much either as it was queen like and didn’t want to get dirty. The other dog enjoyed the beach experience and loved the water as it went in even without a stick to retrieve.
