It doesn’t take long after a snow fall for the critters to stomp down the snow and create their own highways on my lawn, especially heading towards the bird feeders.
Even though there was snow early in the month, today is the official start of winter. But after shoveling the new snow today, I was thinking that it would be nice if it was the end of winter instead.
The weather forecast has possible snow tomorrow, but this white isn’t from snowflakes. The white feathers collected in the weeds near the breaker wall of the harbor entry are from the sea gulls which often perch on the wall.
The shortest amount daylight will be Tuesday, but today is only nine seconds longer even though the sunset is actually earlier this evening than it will be on the shortest day because on that day, the sunrise is later.
When walking a beach, I watch for interesting pieces of driftwood to see what sea monster shapes I can envision in the wood, but some times the creature looking thing is rather small like this little green monster.
Hopefully the brake was set on this old windmill otherwise with the strong winds yesterday, the windmill might have become airborne with the blades turning fast like an airplane propeller. This windmill was completed 1904 and was an active grinding mill until 1926.
The very warm December day is melting the snow but a steady melt so no little streams running across my lawn. This little stream of water is feeding the Now and Then Falls, which had low flow this past October compared to springtime. And the irregular flow is how it got its name.
There was only a brief peek of blue sky today and the patches of blue were not very big either on a rather cloudy day. The pieces of blue sky was easy to overlook just like these tiny blossoms of the Forget-me-not plant.
The snow covered ground looks perfect for a sleigh ride but it is a good thing the snow has been melting the last couple of days otherwise the snow might be too deep for this little one to pull a sleigh.
