With the start of March, it is time to test the folklore of “In Like A Lion, Out Like A Lamb” or “In Like A Lamb, Out Like A Lion” for this year. Except today wasn’t a lion or a lamb. The sun was out but below freezing temperatures although at least above zero so I guess it was more like a kitty instead of a lion.

Mother Nature reminded us that winter is still here with the new big fluffy snowflakes, even if yesterday’s temperature finally reached the 40 degree mark which gave a little hope that spring was coming early like Jimmy the Groundhog said.

The temperature finally reached the 40 degree mark which caused more melting of the snow and ice off my roof, but none of the icicles were as huge as these on the rock cliffs along the shore of Lake Superior.

The steady breeze made the wind chill below freezing today so my cats weren’t laying around in the warm sunshine like these cats are.

A few degrees above freezing with sunshine all day has me thinking of warmer times and flowers in bloom.

There was a new light coating of snow overnight, but at least the sun came out later in the morning to help melt the white stuff off the trees limbs again.

The above freezing temperature allowed some melting of snow, but like this waterfall, the amount was a little trickle and falling from my roof. It will take a warmer day to get more flow.

Although I haven’t seen that the ice road between Bayfield and Madeline Island is officially open, I have noticed on the webcam, a number of vehicles driving across the ice. The 1.9 mile ice road is an extension of County Highway H during most winters, which is lined by Christmas trees and crosses Lake Superior. It is a different feeling traveling across the ice road listening to the cracking of the ice.

Instead of frost falling today, snowflakes were dropping from the sky. And many of the waterfalls in the area are frozen and not flowing, but I am looking forward to the spring melt when they start falling again.
