Although the ground was white with frost this morning, some ‘flowers’ or weeds were still blooming in the chilly sunshine. Course this sow thistle in my flower bed this fall shows I didn’t do a good job of weeding this summer.

Today on this Veterans Day, we remember all persons who have served in the United States Armed Forces. It coincides with other holidays, including Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, to mark the armistice signed between the Allies of World War I and Germany at Compiègne, France, for the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front of World War I, which took effect at eleven o’clock in the morning—the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month” of 1918.

After climbing the half mile trail the from the parking lot and climbing up 300 feet in elevation to Summit Peak, you are greeted with a wonderful view of the Porcupine Mountains especially in October during the autumn display of color. Summit Peak is the third highest point in Michigan and if you still have some energy left, you can climb the tower up another 40 feet up so that you are at the highest point.

The unusual warm November temperatures make for nice hiking days, even up to the top of Summit Peak, but now trees are bare as the ground now has the last remains of the autumn colors.

One advantage of a nice warm Sunday evening in November is that it makes viewing a sunset more fun when you can do so in short sleeves and not bundled up in a coat and needing gloves which are needed in the cold winter time.

The usually warm November Saturday had many people outside enjoying the nice weather. Some might have even hiked along to Presque Isle River to see the three different waterfalls, including this small one called Nawadaha Falls which drops about fifteen feet.

If I didn’t have to mow lawn on this nice November day, it would have been a great day to visit more waterfalls before they ice up. Located on the Black River in Upper Michigan, Gorge Falls, drops about 25 feet as it nears Lake Superior.
