There was no bright colors from a flower on this gray winter day but at least there was no new snow like some other parts of the state received.

There was some melting today as it made it to 44 degrees this afternoon so it would have been a great day to enjoy the outdoors except the wind made it feel like barely freezing. But out of the wind, maybe a little sunbathing could happen like this Great Blue Heron positioning its wings to catch the sun rays. And while the technique may help to warm the bird, the sunbathing is also used to get rid of parasites living on their skin and feathers since just ten minutes in the sun rays can heat the wings to 140 to 160 degrees which is hot enough to kill lice.

It may have been too cold for any of my rodents to stick their heads up on groundhog day around here, but with temperatures near freezing this morning, I found that a possum had left some tracks in the new white coating.

By the afternoon, white snow pellets were falling from the sky and by night, a light coating was covering my cement. I rather see white foam from a waterfall instead, especially when the mist causes a mini rainbow patch to appear also.

The cold week helped to form ice on Lake Superior along the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, but not safe enough yet to venture out to see the ice formations. The above freezing temperatures this coming week but break up the ice that has formed.

The day started out at zero degrees but it very slowly warmed to the 20s by afternoon with the sunshine brightening up the snow cover on a wintery Saturday.

With the temperature dropping to -21 overnight, it sure has me wishing for a nice summer day down at the pond watching fluffy clouds floating by, dragonflies darting about, bees landing on the flowers and listening to frog croaking.

Punxsutawney Phil and Sun Prairie’s Jimmy the Groundhog predicted six more weeks of winter, but if winter only lasted six more weeks, that would be an early spring for here. It was too cold for any of my furry rodents to poke their heads out of their winter dens, but they wouldn’t have seen their shadow at sunrise, but the dozen turkeys crossing the road at noon did see their shadows so it might be a really long winter.
