There was a mature bald eagle near the side of the road when I drove by today and the other day there was an immature bald eagle near the same area.

The robins have returned too and I sure hope that their tails don’t need to be snowed on three times before spring arrives as I like the almost snowless winter.

The pheasant in my woods has been calling more frequent lately and I scared it into flight when I was walking near my pond. Powerful breast muscles can deliver bursts of power that allow the bird to escape trouble in a hurry by flying nearly vertically into the air and reaching speeds of nearly 40 miles per hour.

With the birds migrating south, you might see a flock that you normally don’t see in the summer as they make a brief pitstop on their journey. The tiny horn like feathers on the adult males that sometimes stick up on their heads is what gives them the name of a Horned Lark.

It looks like the hummingbirds have join the ranks of the other summer birds that have headed south. It has been a couple of days since I had a lone hummingbird tanking up on sugar water before making the long trip.

It is hard to imagine that the little baby oriole that left the nest in late June has already flow south for the winter. The last oriole I spotted was a week ago and now it will be next May before the orioles return to my yard.
