The size of the Great Blue Heron makes them easier to spot than a Green Heron, but the tendency of the Green Heron to conceal themselves on the edge of the water behind vegetation makes it hard to spot them. A few days ago I scared a Green Heron out of my pond and the following day another flew out of the cattails along the road. And again today, while I was mowing, I think I chased the same heron away.  Even when I search for them, I never spot the heron until it is airborne and maybe I might get a photo if I see where it lands in a tree, where even there it is hidden by leaves.

My birdhouses will have a variety of nest types in them, from the fine grass swirls of the bluebirds, a very messy grass and feathers nest of the sparrows, sticks the wrens uses, grass and trash (like candy wrappers) of the tree swallows and the a very soft moss nest of the chickadees. This chickadee was collecting nesting material from the side of the tree.

I have made numerous bluebird houses over the years and have enjoyed the sights and sounds of the blue colored birds so it was a disappointment not having any bluebirds around last year other than a brief sighting of a pair at my family’s farm. This year appeared to be the same without the normal spring arrival time of the bluebirds and past the normal first nesting period, so I was surprised to hear a bluebird this evening in my backyard. Although I didn’t see the bird so I don’t know if it was like this less colorful female or a blue male, but hopefully it is a pair that will stay for the summer.

A year ago this week, there were little baby great blue herons at several different ages, but this year with the very late spring, the parents were still sitting on the eggs. They would stand up and stretch before doing a little grooming, before settling back on the eggs. They hunkered down in the large nest high up in the trees so you almost didn’t see them in the nest.
