Picture of the Day for May 22, 2015

The chipmunks have begun digging my flowers out (when the flowers aren’t in the garage to protect from freezing) and they don’t go very far when I go outside so they can resume they digging once I leave.  And while chipmunks can climb trees, they construct extensive tunnel systems for their underground nests. To hide the construction of its burrow, the eastern chipmunk carries dirt to a different location in its cheek pouches and with the number of tunnel entrances on my lawn, they would have had to carry a lot dirt so I don’t know why they have to dig in my flower pots too.

My weather predicting rodent says that snow has melted as he had been on top of rocks and stumps scouting this morning. It is the first appearance of the chipmunks and a sign spring is coming. But he kept looking towards my porch as I think he wants me to get my flower and garden pots out so he can dig the dirt out and uproot my flowers and eat my garden seeds.

The dang groundhog sure was wrong when spring would arrive and missed the mark by more than a month. The more accurate weather predicting rodent is the chipmunk since he doesn’t pop his head out of his tunnels until temperature warms up and the snow is melting. And with the deep snow pack this winter, he even was able to find an acorn that the squirrels didn’t find.

Hopefully the chipmunk didn’t eat all the acorns he found this fall and stored a lot for this long, cold winter. Chipmunks construct expansive burrows with chambers for the food storage, sleeping quarters and refuse tunnels. During the winter, the chipmunk may enter long periods of decreased physiological activity, but does not truly hibernate and instead of storing fat, they periodically dip into their cache of nuts and seeds throughout the winter.

The birds and critters must have been listening to the weather forecast since there were lots of birds pigging out at the feeders, even the cardinal (which some say brings the snow). And the chipmunk came out of hibernation to stuff its cheeks full of seed to carry off to its den. After the fourth trip, I went out to the feeder and the chipmunk just sat there waiting for me to leave so it could continue stealing my seed.

The colder weather sure can be felt and it is making my cat unhappy, not because it is too cold for him, but because the chipmunks are not out playing for him to try to be the big hunter.

A chipmunk can gather up to 165 acorns in a day and I saw one that had three acorns stuffed in its cheeks. The chipmunk’s den contains at least two chambers, one with a cozy leaf-lined nest and the other used as a storage pantry for the chipmunk’s favorite foods, including nuts and seeds (the seeds from my bird feeder).

Chipmunks hibernate, but instead of storing fat, they periodically dip into their cache of nuts and seeds throughout the winter.

Chipmunk Hanging Out

Picture of the Day for August 29, 2012

Since this week started out as a critter week, I might as well continue with that theme. Besides the squirrels fighting over the bitternuts yesterday, which I could hear inside, the chipmunks are making a lot of noise and busy eating acorns. Apparently the young have surfaced as my population has really increased the last week. This chipmunk has a big pile of acorn shells on this stump where he has been eating.

Since I haven’t posted a critter picture yet in this new volume of the picture of the day yet, I figured I better use a photo of my friend’s favorite critter. The chipmunk might not be on my favorite list since I am missing two marigolds and one petunia when I watered today. And several other pots are missing a lot of dirt.

The dang chipmunks are taking my sunflower seeds and burying them in the pot and the seeds sprout. So then they don’t have a stash of seeds and the birds didn’t get their seeds either. I thought I would try putting something around the shepherd hook pole they were climbing to get the seeds and I found a piece of plastic tree wrap and had it dangling down on the pole. But that didn’t stop them since it was just the right size for them in crawl through and it created a safety ladder cage instead for their climbing. I can’t win against them and you can see the nice digging toes they have. Now if I could only train them to dig the weeds instead of my flowers.
