On June 12, 1899, a tornado hit the town of New Richmond in western Wisconsin, not too far from where I live. And while it wasn’t a huge tornado, it hit the afternoon of the first day of a circus and the deadly path claimed 117 lives and injured 150 others making it the 9th deadliest tornado in US history.

And two different tornado hit my home farm, each time it took down a barn, and both times it was on June 12, so when the skies darkened again this afternoon, I wondered if I should skedaddle out of the area.

The water on my pond might be smooth, even with the wind blowing, but that is because the water has been frozen stiff for a couple of months now. And it looks cold covered in snow and not at all warm and inviting as during the summertime.

Looking across the barren soybean field, in the direction that I watch for northern lights, the clouds today reminded me of light rays shooting upward like the Aurora borealis .

The clouds at midday were an interesting mix; puffy white ones but with some dark clouds too and wispy clouds in the middle. And some of the darker ones let some raindrops fall this evening.

When the rainbow appeared the other night, it was bright and colorful before it faded but when it reappeared a few minutes later, the sun was setting and creating a pink hue on the clouds. The rainbow also picked up the pink color, obscuring the normal range of colors and created a pink arc in the sky as the sun slipped below the horizon.

I had intended to photograph the full moon last night when it was over my pond, but I didn’t feel like donating blood to the mosquitoes to wait that long for the moon to rise high enough, even if it would have been a perfect picture in my mind for the first day of summer because spending time by lake or pond is an image of summer for me.

The clouds last night, after the rain let up, looked more like smoke billowing from a fire than rain clouds. But the clouds did drop rain quickly in some areas, causing flash flood warnings and some thunderstorm warnings, so it was nice to see them moving away from the area.
