The clouds to the southeast were catching some pink hues as the sun was setting in the west on a warm September evening.
Clouds Collecting Color
On a warm sunny Sunday, heading to the lake (or a small pond in my case) might be a way to spend the afternoon for some swimming, boating, fishing or just relaxing watching the clouds go by. But since the fish in my small pond are only bait size, I guess I would have go to somewhere to fish or to kayak.
Sunday Afternoon by the Water
Today is Pentecost, from the ancient Christian expression pentekoste hemera, which means “fiftieth day” which was borrowed from the Jewish holiday Shavuot. For Christians, Pentecost is a holiday on which commemorate the coming of the Holy Spirit on the early followers of Jesus and the start of the church. The Acts of the Apostles in the New Testament state, “And when the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. All of a sudden, a sound came from heaven, like a strong wind, filling the house where the people had gathered. Something like tongues of fire rested on their heads.”
These scary clouds look like fire descending from the sky and coming down to earth so maybe what it looked like on first Christian Pentecost.
Fiery Clouds
According to the Farmers’ Almanac, if it thunders on All Fool’s Day, it brings good crops of corn and hay. We could use a good crop season but so far all day the thunderstorms have been staying just to the north, although there is a line of storms heading this direction now. The cropland remains idle after the long winter so hopefully the April Fool’s Day storm will bring a great crop year.
April Fool’s Day Thunder
Recently there have been a lot of popcorn type rain showers springing up, with thunderheads dotting the sky and providing a firework like display inside the cloud as the lightning appears to slam around the inside of it. My finger was too slow reacting to catch the lightning flashes but it seems odd to be watching it from a distance knowing it is raining a lot under the cloud while I remained dry.
Firework Cloud
The sunset last night kept reflecting off the clouds, changing their color and at times, reflecting rays up into the sky. But as pretty as the sunset was, just forty-five degrees to the north from the sunset was a thunderhead and there was lightning flashing all around inside the storm cloud. My finger was too slow, so I didn’t get a picture of the lightning inside the thunderhead before the lower dark clouds covered my view of it.
