Sitting by a lake watching the sun drop below the horizon on a warm summer day is more appealing than watching the wind whip the falling snow on a cold winter day.

Some of these freighters are in the docks for repairs as well as a brand new self-unloading bulk carrier for Great Lakes is being built at the Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. And while the scene here is fairly quiet, even with the construction noise, 80 years ago the scene at a different harbor was not peaceful when the surprised attack happened at Pearl Harbor. And as President Franklin D. Roosevelt said, December 7, 1941—a date which will live in infamy.

When the old Baileys Harbor Lighthouse needed to be replaced, the Lighthouse Board decided that range lights at the head of Baileys Harbor with nearby Cana Island light would serve navigation better. The rear fixed white Bailey Harbor Range Light is in the keeper’s house. Near the shore and 950 feet from the rear light, the front fixed red range light was in an octagonal tower. Ships entering the harbor needed to keep the white light directly above the red light as they entered the harbor. Although the first keeper of the new Baileys Harbor Range Lights was appointed on December 1, 1869, the lights were not put into operation until the navigation season opened the following year.

Perched on a bluff 76 feet above Green Bay’s waters, a third-and-a-half-order Fresnel lens in the Eagle Bluff Lighthouse was first shown on October 15, 1868. The fixed-white beacon was visible for sixteen miles in clear weather. Because the light tower was the highest point on the bluff, it was often struck by lightning which traveled the the circular iron staircase damaging furnishings and walls so it was a good thing it was a sunny day when I climbed the staircase.

This stretch of road at the tip of Door County is frequently photographed, especially in the autumn when the leaves turn color. The design of the fifteen curves are said to have been influenced by the works of architect Jens Jenson, who early in his career design what he called the ideal highway which would slow traffic and keep nature always in view.

Some of the area schools started last Wednesday and others started today, but the school the children went to this week probably didn’t look like this one. The Pioneer Schoolhouse was built in 1880 after Ephraim’s first log school in Door County became too small. In 1900, an addition doubled the size to accommodate 80 students and the tall windows allowed more natural light inside. After the school closed in 1949, the Ephraim Historical Foundation preserved the schoolhouse as a museum.

Built in a late 12th century Norwegian stave church style, the Boynton Chapel in Door County was handcrafted by Winifred and Donald Boynton. Winifred learned woodcarving and fresco techniques as they worked on the chapel. There are numerous carvings like the dragon arch of the doorway, fifty-two gargoyles under the eaves, the twelve apostles, carved pews, raised pulpit, altar and baptismal font. Winifred Boynton also painted forty-one frescoes which decorate the interior.
