A Sunday walk through the woods did not reveal any wildflowers poking up or blossoming, but there was a small patch of blue from some Siberian Squill, which is an ornamental from Eurasia and now is an invasive species here.

The skunk cabbage is able to generate heat by cellular respiration and is able to melt its way through the icy ground to bloom early in the spring. That heat may also help spread the odor that is in its name. It might need that heat to melt the snow that fell today.

The sunshine today was rather deceiving with the temperature below zero and summer green grass and bright flowers are nowhere to be seen for months yet. Although the orange hawkweed is a very invasive plant that is native to Europe.

It may be the start of a new month, but it is still too early to find any flowers blooming outside. And tomorrow the groundhog will tell us how soon we might see flowers peeking up through the snow.

I had some catnip that have survived the freezing nights so I dug some up to bring inside so my cats can have some fresh leaves for a few more weeks. And while they might love the fresh catnips, it would have been nice to see some colorful blooms instead of dead brown remembers that summer is over.

There wasn’t for sunshine today, so the blossoms of the tansy would have to provide the yellow color. Common tansy is another invasive plant from Europe and Asia which forms a dense cover and outcompete native plants as well as being toxic to humans and livestock when eaten. Tansy has a long history of uses like medicinal and an insect repellent.
