While the hollyhocks were soaking up some sunshine today, some may have been flattened to the ground with this evening’s storm which brought wind, hail and rain.
The bumblebees were busy collecting pollen, especially in this patch of hollyhocks, so maybe they know it is August 1st and that the summer season is disappearing very quickly so soon the summertime flakes of pollen will turn into winter snowflakes.
I have some late blooming hollyhocks this year – probably because the deer ate all the leaves off the plants earlier this spring and the poor flowers had to overcome that grazing setback.
After being grazed off by deer this spring, I was surprised to see any hollyhocks blooming this summer but a few re-sprouted and they are providing a display of pinks and reds blossoms.
With the temperature getting down to 16 last night, I think the last lonely hollyhock blossom got rather stiff since the pail of water outside had two inches of ice in it. I rather be seeing the first blossom of the year and not the last one.
