The apple blossoms are winding down for the season although some later varieties still have blossoms for the house wren to enjoy the scent.
Wren in Apple Blossoms
Until I put camera in the duck house, I never realized how many other visitors came to the boxes besides ducks. Today, a house wren poked its head inside but probably figured it would take a long time to fill the large house with sticks for its nest. I was surprised to see a wren back this early as normally mine arrive after the orioles and grosbeaks, which I haven’t spotted yet this spring.
Wren Back Early
While the House Wren may be one of the tiny birds, it is rather mighty, territorial and aggressive as they will puncture eggs in nearby nests or even removing the eggs or young chicks. They will harass and peck larger birds and they sure holler at me when I get near one of their nests.
Mighty Little Wren
Although the temperature is above average today and too hot for me, the summer is slipping away and another sign that winter’s return is approaching. besides the maple leaves turning, is that a summertime voice is absent again. The very loud song from the tiny house wren has been missing this week and there is no sign on the little brown bird anymore. It is one of the last birds to arrive in the spring and now has abandoned its summer home already and headed south for the winter.
Wren Missing
There was still snow just six days ago but it seems like the weather is skipping over spring as some of the spring wildflowers are done blooming in that short time. And the last of the birds have returned with the arrival of the hummingbirds and house wrens. And the wrens are busy making their nest as soon as they arrived back yesterday.
Gathering Sticks
Watch the busy wren gather sticks to build her nest.
Since I have a lot of birdhouses out, it seems like I either scare a bluebird off her nest or I get chewed out by a tiny wren with a big voice if I walk too close to one. The adult wrens were busy taking insects into the birdhouse to feed the noisy little baby wrens. But after taking the picture, I came back into the house with a little green inchworm on my hand so they haven’t got all the bugs yet.
Wren Busy Feeding
Watch as the house wren brings a variety of insects to feed its young and since the wrens build up their nest to be level with the opening, once in a while you can see the little heads poking up trying to get fed.
The little house wrens returned more than a week ago, but you didn’t hear their loud singing during the cold, rainy week. Now that the sun returned today, the yard is filled with their song again and soon they will start building their nests. The House Wren has one of the largest ranges of any songbird in the New World so many yards see the fierce little warrior.
