The New Year started out with some sunshine, but it was a cold day as the temperature never climbed above zero and the wind made it feel like -25. And tonight will be even colder.

The few hours of morning sunshine still wasn’t enough to melt the ice off the tree limbs and the ice probably will stay for several more days as the frigid air remains.

The new snow that fell overnight was coated in a thick layer of ice. The ground looked like a great big ice skating rink. And the icy tree limbs were catching the glow from the late afternoon sun.

The string of nights with temperatures in the 20s has formed an ice layer on my pond, but there was a small patch of open water for the morning’s sunrise to leave a pink reflection.

Most of the snow has melted except in the ditches, some drifts and in the woods, although some snow predicted for this week. But the ice is melting on my pond, creating some open water so hopefully soon some ducks will return and nest in the waiting duck boxes.

The ferries between Bayfield and Madeline Island stopped running last week and until the ice is thick enough to drive on, the transportation across Lake Superior is provided by wind sleds. Wind sleds are powered by two big fans to propel across the ice. This 24 seat wind sled, Ice Angel IV, carries supplies and people back and forth from the island. At least there is some wind protection but I imagine it is a cold two mile ride in the sub-zero temperatures.

Yesterday morning revealed icy branches sparkling in the sunlight and snow covered ground. While some of the snow melted in the afternoon sun, additional snow fell today to recoat the ground.

The sun was out and it shown bright on the new layer of snow. I watched the poor wood ducks waddle through the snow after they took a swim in the steam rising pond. The tree limbs sparkled with the ice coating but by afternoon, the sun was able to melt a majority of the snow and the ice under the snow layer.

The ice crystals make an interesting ‘flower’ but they will fade and disappear in the bright sunlight as the sun strength becomes stronger near the end of February.

A few snowflakes fell this afternoon and so it was another gray day but a year ago, the last week of January was a very cold one with -55 wind chills and the high stayed below zero. This icy and snowy scene has a frigid look even with the sun out.
