With another holiday day with a heat index over 100, some people cooled off in the sixty degree waters at a Lake Superior beach.

With a dewpoint of 84 and temperatures in the 90s, the heat index reached 120 today and I sure wished I was up by Lake Superior today, even if I am not brave enough to kayak on the big lake, wading in its cooler waters would have felt nice.

Today is National Lighthouse Day and one of my favorite lighthouses is Split Rock Lighthouse on a 133 foot cliff on Lake Superior, north of Duluth, MN. The light, first lit in 1910, was retired in 1969 by the U.S. Coast Guard and now is operated by the Minnesota Historical Society.

With the hot, above normal temperatures, it would have been a good day to head to the beach and I wouldn’t have even minded getting splashed with the cooler Lake Superior waters.

There are some thunderstorm rolling through this afternoon with possible 3 inch hail, so I don’t know if it will clear by evening to see the sunset.

There are chances of thunderstorms today and you can see them coming across the lake easier than where there are trees and houses in the way. This storm looks like there is a funnel cloud forming so might be a nasty storm.

Over the holiday weekend, the Apostle Islands Station of the Wayzata Yacht Club held their Spring Series Regatta on Lake Superior in Bayfield, Wisconsin and the water was filled with colorful boats as they raced towards the finish line.

The forecast has freezing rain tonight and tomorrow morning but I definitely don’t want to see anymore ice here. I rather have to visit the ice caves on the shore of Lake Superior to see icy tunnels and ice formations and not the slick ice on my driveway.
