There seems to be a bumper crop of acorns this year and they sound more like baseballs as they drop from the high branches and crash to the ground. My path to the pond felt like walking on marbles.

The strong winds today caused a lot of the oak leaves to fall, which normally hang on longer into winter. My lawn was covered in brown leaves as the colorful red and orange maple leaves are long gone and only a few poplar yellow leaves dotted the lawn.

A new coating of snow covered the ground last evening, but the morning’s wind removed another bit of the autumn as one of the few remaining oak leaves fell and stabbed into the new snow.

The precipitation seems to be continuing the last few days and into tomorrow, but the form of it has been changing back and forth between snow and rain so everything outside keeps getting wet.

It appears that the oak trees may be masting this year, meaning they are dropping a lot of acorns. At least it felt like I was walking on a bunch of marbles on my path through the woods today. Weather conditions, such as spring frost, summer droughts and fall rains, play a big part on when oak trees produce a lot of acorn. The extra acorns means there might be some acorns not eaten and can germinate into trees as only about 1 in 10,000 becomes a tree. But the downfall of the extra acorns can also mean a surge in populations of rodents, small mammals and deer, which in turn can lead to an increase in ticks causing a spike in Lyme disease the two years following a good acorn crop.
