Two little hepatica blossoms emerged but they were closed in the late afternoon when the clouds rolled in. The spring peepers were making their cheerful singing and a frog jumped into the pond, but I haven’t seen any tree frogs yet. Although maybe tomorrow it will be warm enough to release my house guest tree frog back to the great outdoors.

As March comes to an end, I guess it went out like a lamb once the sun came out later in the day when the bluebirds were singing in the yard. The pond had new visitors today too with a pair of geese camped out all day and a pair of mallards later in the day. I hope the geese move on since they are rather messy and I want room in the pond for when the wood ducks return.

Even though the cat’s water bowl had a thick layer of ice on it yet this afternoon, the ice on my pond is slowly melting and only about a fifth of it is still covered in ice. So with the ice leaving and the robins returning, a hint of spring is appearing.

The sun melted a little snow, forming a thin layer of water on top of the ice on my pond, which caught the color of the setting sun.

Yesterday my pond started to overflow from the melting snow but with the rain today, the scene changed from snow to a lawn covered in running water but since it was still raining, I didn’t venture out for the after picture today.

The water on my pond might be smooth, even with the wind blowing, but that is because the water has been frozen stiff for a couple of months now. And it looks cold covered in snow and not at all warm and inviting as during the summertime.

The sun may be out but it is just barely above freezing and there no green grass or open water on the pond as everything is coated in snow and ice. Six months might not be a long time in the history of the universe, but it makes a big difference in the seasonal temperatures.

The sun didn’t make much of an appearance today either and it sure didn’t dry out the ground so I wasn’t able to mow around my pond today.
Wet Fall at the Pond
On a warm summer day, the pond is full of activity with frogs, fish, tadpoles, damselflies and dragonflies. This dragonfly was busy laying her eggs in the water. The eggs are surrounded by a jelly-like substance which helps the eggs to stick to plants or the bottom of the pond.

I had intended to photograph the full moon last night when it was over my pond, but I didn’t feel like donating blood to the mosquitoes to wait that long for the moon to rise high enough, even if it would have been a perfect picture in my mind for the first day of summer because spending time by lake or pond is an image of summer for me.
