Another day of snowfall adding to the snow pack of a foot makes it impossible to see any spring flowers if they previously had poked their noses up out of the ground. It is hard to remember it is spring when it looks like winter.
Where Have All The Flowers Gone
My hardy little violas were not hardy enough to survive the near zero temperature overnight so they looked rather sad and wimpy. And so with the last of my flowers gone for the season, it probably will be another six months before snow glories like these can emerge when the snow melts in the spring.
Half Year Wait
Spring finally arrived the last day of April as the temperature reached 81 and the last of the snow melted in my yard. The south winds blew in a male oriole, dragonflies, butterflies and the female bluebirds. And some flowers finally opened up with one lone daffodil, two hepaticas, and some clumps of snow glories.
Snow Glories Open Up
Although this clump of blue color was found in my woods, it is not a wildflower, but another ‘escapee’ which used to be planted near my house. None exist by the house now, but a few Snow Glories are scattered around the lawn too. They must be celebrating Emancipation Day now that they free from the original bed. The Emancipation Day celebrated in Washington DC marks the anniversary of the signing of the Compensated Emancipation Act, which president Abraham Lincoln signed on April 16, 1862. It is annually held on April 16 but the holiday this year is observed on today instead.
Freed Snow Glories
The few poor wildflowers which had opened already were closed up tight with drooping heads and probably a bit frozen with temperatures in the teens the last few days. The sunshine this morning is revealing a few new glimpses of blue and hopefully with a warmer stretch, more flowers will start blooming.

The proverb “March winds and April showers bring forth May flowers”, first recorded in 1886, or the shorter version “April showers bring May flowers” (originally “Sweet April showers/Do spring May flowers”, part of a poem recorded in 1610) are common expressions in English speaking countries. But it doesn’t say whether it is rain or snow showers which bring the flowers although at least it has just been rain showers here this morning and not snow like further north. The colder temperatures still have kept the flowers from sprouting up this spring yet and if they had, flowers like the snow glories could be covered with snow.
