That rodent was right, at least about winter being around for a while, as more snow fell today, putting a new layer of that white stuff all over everything.

The morning’s light revealed another new coating of snow, which hid the ice underneath and made it treacherous for man and machine. My snowblower hit a patch of that hidden ice and slid the front tire off the driveway and all of my pushing and cat litter couldn’t get it out so I had to use my car to pull it out. The snow might be pretty until it turns against me!

The warmer temperature and strong winds today finally started to shake and melt the snow off the trees so my chickadees can perch in their tree by the bird feeder again.

The chickadees were complaining that their normal tree limb perches were still covered with snow today and they had to land farther away from the feeder than normal.

Daylight revealed the new snow layer covering everything. The average depth was around a foot but some of the drifts piled the snow as high as the door handle. The new snow looked ‘pretty’, but it was hard to move around in it.

The snow storm was slowing in arriving so there wasn’t a flake flying this morning, but when it arrived, it was hard to see very far through the snowflakes and they quickly coated me white when I was out in it. The snow was drifting and piling up on the door so I had to leap out of the door.

The snow was melting and shrinking with the above freezing temperature, but this tree limb probably will be recovered with a lot more snow if the weather forecasters are accurate for the approaching storm.

On a very cold day like today, there is no way to sneak up to a critter to take a picture as the snow squeaks very loudly. On the sub-zero days, the snow doesn’t melt when stepped on but instead the ice crystals are crushed making a squeaking, or creaking, sound.

In muddy conditions critter tracks can be spotted easier than on hard ground, but tracks really stand out in a fresh coating of snow. Just in the short distance I walked to the bird feeders and to feed the cats, I saw numerous bird tracks, as well as mouse, squirrels, rabbit and even evidence that a stray cat visited too. And of course I left my tracks too in the snow.
