There was blue skies and white to be found today, but the white snow doesn’t have a pretty fragrance nor was it as warm out as when these wild plums were blooming in the spring.

Birds and bees were active in the apple blossoms when the sun peaked out for a while today. Although some blossoms have started to fall already, creating a white layer on the ground but at least it wasn’t snow. Although it looked like it was snowing today with the fuzz from the poplar trees flying thick in the air.

The chilly, cloud day didn’t seem to spring like but I spotted a lonely Wild Geranium blooming in the ditch. So maybe after a sunny weekend, more blossoms will open up and fill the area with pink color.

The trees are slowing budding out but right now it is hard to know if it is spring or fall at a quick glance until the new leaves start to emerge and the grass starts to green up again.

The birds were singing in today’s sunshine as few butterflies floated by and this evening the pond is full of song from the spring peepers giving hope that maybe spring is finally here. And the road ditches looked a little furry too with the pussy willows blooming and their resemblance to tiny cat paws is a reminder to the new batches of kittens born this spring too.

Another day of snowfall adding to the snow pack of a foot makes it impossible to see any spring flowers if they previously had poked their noses up out of the ground. It is hard to remember it is spring when it looks like winter.

There were a few more signs of spring today with the return of the red-winged blackbirds, some killdeers and the call of sandhill cranes. A few small patches of green popped in the woods too with moss emerging from the snow.

It was another day of watching snowflakes falling and blowing. People may complain about dandelions in their yards but seeing the little parachutes of the weed would mean warmer temperatures.

The “pretty” snow looks nice for Christmas but with snow storms after snow storms, that white stuff is looking less appealing especially when I was raking snow off my roof and having to fix the snow blower in the cold. Warmer temperatures and white apple blossoms would be a welcome addition to the scene.
