The winter cold water of Lost Creek Number One flows downstream after the falls and will merge together with Lost Creek Number Two and Lost Creek Number Three at the Lost Creek Bog as it empties into Lake Superior.

After visiting Amnicon Falls yesterday, today I went to Twin Falls but in order to view the falls at the base, you have to cross the stream which normally you can step on rocks to get across without getting your feet wet. But the melting snow caused the water level to be a lot higher so even with boots, I wasn’t able to cross without stepping in icy waters so I could only take the trail to the top of the falls instead.

The rain yesterday melted some snow and water was running in ditches and eventually flowed into creeks and rivers, but the below freezing temperature today is putting an ice layer back on the water.

With a string of cold days this month and more chilly days in the forecast, sometimes it is hard to believe small streams like this one are not frozen over. I would rather fish from the edge of this stream than to stand on the frozen lake surface and fish through a hole cut in the ice.

The snow has been settling and compacting in the warmer temperatures but not melting enough to run off. Some rivers and spring fed streams are still flowing but my little pond has settled into its icy blanket.

This stream almost looks like ice but unlike my sidewalk, it wasn’t icy and was a nice flowing creek, at least for a few more weeks before the winter freeze stiffens it.

Some of the streams are flowing again and I spotted some ducks where there was some open water but I imagine the water was a bit on the chilly side especially where new ice was recovering the ponds.

Although it was slightly above freezing today, there was no autumn foliage and no sunshine to cause a reflection of yellow and gold in the pool of water as in October. Instead the ice is forming along the edges and snow hides the green beneath.

While hiking in a stream bed, filled with sand to large boulders, to a waterfall, I spotted a pine tree growing from the fallen boulder. It always amazes me how moss, lichens, ferns and trees can establish a hold on rocks.
