When I went down to my pond this morning (and scared a duck that I didn’t see until too late), I noticed a a half dozen little green tree frog sunning themselves on the grass leaves. And they must have just recently changed from a tadpole as their tails hadn’t been fully reabsorbed yet.
With the change of the weather and the temperature barely reaching 60 degrees and the low in the 40s, I think these tree frogs are discussing whether it is time to start thinking about hibernation (or catching a ride south for the winter).
When I lifted the cover for the propane tank, I spotted a tree frog hiding under the lid and I always wonder if it could be an offspring of the tree frog that spent the winter in my house five years ago. At least the one inside my house didn’t do the mating call before I turned it loose outside in the spring as the tree frogs were rather noisy the prior evening.
The tree frog has been serenading me for several days as I been painting my porch. I wonder if it related to the frog that hitched a ride into my house and lived inside over winter.
The tree frogs were ‘singing’ rather loudly this afternoon, but I don’t know if my rescued tree frog, who wintered over in my house and released in the spring, was part of the chorus today.
After I released my frog back into the wilds after spending several months during the winter inside my house, I figured I wouldn’t see him anymore. But I discovered he has been hanging around his old home that I left on the porch but he probably was upset with me since I hadn’t kept his home moist. And I let his ‘pond’ dry out so once I filled his pie pan with water, he was in it that night and the next night too.
Many people are scrambling to finish their taxes today, even though they had three extra days to file them. The April 15 filing date was pushed later because the 15th and Emancipation Day landed on the weekend which extended the filing date.
My tree frog, ‘Mr. Linty’, was ’emancipated’ although I am not sure my unexpected and unusual house pet was real thrilled with his re-entry to the outdoors since now he won’t have flies delivered to his indoor home which made it easy for him to catch his dinner. His indoor apartment, lined with moss even had a swimming pond. The last check this evening found him on the outside porch wall just above the lip of his container so he hasn’t wandered too far yet.
A tree frog is any frog that spends a major portion of its lifespan in trees, so I guess I will have to call this a porch frog since he spends most of his time hanging around my porch and on the porch door window at night catching moths and other bugs.
