The day started below freezing but at least the sun came out for those planting trees this Arbor Day. But those new little trees will take a while to reach high into the sky. I actually un-planted a bitternut tree (or at least a nut) when I was planting my flowers and discovered the nut that they chipmunks had buried in my flower pot.

Today is Earth Day, which started in 1970, and events worldwide are held to demonstrate support for environmental protection. The main focus has changed throughout the years, with recycling efforts boosted in 1990 and in 2000, the push was on global warming and pushing for clean energy. The organizers behind Earth Day are hoping to use the 2016 celebration to plant 7.8 billion trees, divest from fossil fuels and make cities 100 per cent renewable.

The weather has been rather fickle this morning as one moment it is dark, then the sun pops out, and the next minute it is snowing. While I didn’t spot any ducks in this pond when I drove by earlier in the week, my pond has been revolving door for ducks with mallards, hooded merganser and wood ducks. This morning the pair of mallards was sharing the pond with two pairs of wood ducks. On the edge of the pond, robins and blackbird were bopping on the grass. But that wasn’t all on the edge of the pond, as a stray black cat was eyeing up a roasted duck dinner, although he gave up after a while since the ducks were teasing him by swimming around pond staying out of reach.
