The Virginia Bluebells may have felt a bit blue today with all the rain that fell which had my pond overflowing. The buds start out pink and turn blue as the blossom opens up.

The Virginia Bluebells buds start out in a pink color and turns blue as the blossoms open up. Although this one stem of blooms seem to have missed the memo that they were supposed to change color. The pink are like the warm temperatures of yesterday and the blue for the cold weather today. On rare occasions they are white, which I am glad I didn’t see or that might suggest snow.

I don’t live in Virginia, but these pretty flowers are called Virginia Bluebells so I wonder if I can rename them Wisconsin Bluebells. But when they first open up, they are a pink color before the trumpet-like blossom turns to the pretty shade of blue.

The sky was blue today, which meant no new snow, but it also meant the temperatures were below zero this evening in the clear, cold sky with stars twinkling bright. Some blue color from dancing spring wildflowers would bring a warmer feeling.

Although the white from the Bloodroots are gone, the wildflowers right now are mostly white with Trilliums, Wood Anemones, Pussytoes and White Trout Lily scattered around the ground. But there are some colorful blues left in the woods from the Virginia Bluebells. But this are coming to an end as they start out pink and turn to blue and there are few pink left.

The April showers from last night brought May snow today instead of May flowers for a May Day basket. The poor wildflowers were probably calling out a Mayday distress instead when they were being bombed by huge snowflakes today.

A cloudy morning is keeping the blue sky hidden but there is some blue and with pink tones in the Virginia Bluebells which are currently blooming in the woods giving nectar to the butterflies. The blossoms start out in pink but when it matures and ready for pollination, it increases its alkalinity to change the red pigmentation into blue pigmentation, a color that is much more attractive to pollinators.

A warmer day finally revealed more wildflowers but many of them are spring ephemeral, which emerge quickly in the spring and die back to their underground parts after a short growth and reproduction phase, so they disappear quickly from the woods. The Adder’s Tongue, Trillums, Bloodroot, Spring Beauty, and the Virginia Bluebells are all spring ephemeral plants.
The Virginia Bluebells buds are pink which transition to purple and finally to a sky blue color so one plant provides a rainbow of colors. Only a few blossoms in the back have turned to the blue color so I might have a few more days to take pictures of them before they fade away for another year.
