The Horton Covered Bridge spans 55 feet across the Amnicon River just at the start of the fifteen foot drop of the Lower Amnicon Falls.

The last time I visited the Upper Amnicon Falls in January, it was an ice coated column with the water running behind the ice formation, but today the ice is gone. The flow level is low for springtime, but this year there wasn’t much snow pack to melt this season.

I imagine more of the ice has melted in the week since I visited Lost Creek Falls because the temperatures have still been unseasonable warm this winter.

Just a few miles can make a difference in snow amount on the ground, but although the mile and half hike to the waterfall was snow covered and icy, Lost Creek Falls itself was mostly thawed out, I was hoping to see more of a frozen waterfall instead, but it was just too warm this hike.

I stopped at Amnicon Falls State Park today, and while there wasn’t much for snow, but there was ice at the falls. The Now and Then Falls sometimes doesn’t have much flow, but the ice completely covered it this last day of January.

The warm weather is coming to the end and soon the waterfalls will be ice formations instead and hiking to them may become a little trickier with the snow and ice.

Although a cooler day than normal, it was a good day for a Sunday scroll though the parks to catch the autumn colors before they disappear for the year. And visiting a waterfall is always a plus too, like the Amnicon Lower Falls beneath the Horton Cover Bridge.

Lost Creek Falls is one of my favorite waterfalls and it is especially nice in the autumn, although I haven’t visited it for several years so maybe I can do the three mile hike next autumn.

With the rain that some areas have received this week has helped the water level on the rivers which allows more flow over the area waterfalls as the autumn colors begin to show.
