Every time I have been mowing the lawn this month, I have been watching an area just into the edge of a field looking for some purple pink color and yesterday I was rewarded. Last year I had spotted the Lesser Purple Fringed Orchid, which I hadn’t seen in the area for more than 30 years, so I wasn’t sure if it would sprout up this year again but it did near last year’s plant. The dancing petals look like they sliding down a water park slide when their arms raised up and have a fun time doing it.

When I was taking the picture of this blossom, I didn’t realize that there was two blossoms stacked together so it makes it harder to identify but I believe it is call Asiatic Dayflower (which isn’t a native flower). If I was closer to the blossoms, I might have noticed it was two but to get the picture, I was on my knees and arm stretched out over the rock and that clump of blue caught my eye.

This North American native Iris is common is common in sedge meadows, marshes, and along stream banks and shores, so the Blueflag probably liked the last few rainy days, but it was hard for me to get a picture during the rain before the fleeting blossom disappeared. And when the sun came out, the wind was blowing the flower around and made it hard to stay in the frame.

The bumblebees were busy collecting nectar as soon as the rain stopped.  The flowers were drooping their heads even more after the rain, causing the bees to play “Hang on Harvey” in order to get the nectar. Even the bee in the lower left corner had the same pose. Bumblebees are important pollinators of both crops and wildflowers but with their large round body size, compared to their wings, it is hard to believe they are capable of flight.

There was a lot of white on my lawn yesterday, but since it was 80 degrees yesterday, it wasn’t snow. Instead the dandelions were no longer yellow but now white with their seed dispersal sphere ready to release seeds into the wind. One seed is ready to take flight once the breeze catches it parachute to send it sailing in the air.
