I miss seeing the Lesser Purple Fringed Orchid that grew a couple of years near my pond and I keep hoping that a new plant will appear. The blossoms seems like they are dancing and enjoying the day.

When you see a wildflower with yellow blossoms in the spring, you wonder why it is named Bluebead, but when late summer comes, the name makes sense. One of the other common name for the plant is Yellow Bluebead Lily and that name might be more fitting as it would have the yellow from the spring blooms and the blue colored balls in summer.

Some of the road ditches and fields are showing balls of color as the common milkweed begin to bloom. More than 450 insects species feed on the milkweed, including the ant at the top of the flower. The decline in milkweed plants plays a significant part in the monarch butterfly population decline.

The Indian Paintbrush flower seems to be on fire on a swarm summer day. There are several legends on how the flower was named including a Native American boy who wanted to paint a colorful sunset but he couldn’t match the colors and asked the Great Spirit for help who provided the boy paintbrushes dipped in orange, red and yellow colors. The boy painted his amazing sunset picture and he left his brushed scattered on the ground when he finished, which took root and grew into plants.
