My deer ate one patch of three trilliums, but they missed these three great white trillium at least for today. Although I suspect they will be eaten soon as the deer really like this kind of trillium, but they leave the nodding trilliums alone. The repeated grazing by the deer cause the blossoms to be smaller each year or even kill the plants.

The road ditch exploded with yellow color from the marsh marigolds blossoms. There was no hint of yellow on Friday but today they were providing lots of blooms for the bees and butterflies.

The weather was against the poor marsh marigolds this spring as a few days ago they were swallowed up by rushing waters from the heavy rainfall and covered by debris. Then a couple days later, the hail storm striped nearly all the blossoms off as I only spotted less than a dozen yellow flowers on the half mile stretch of road.
Gone Until Next Year
The gray day delivered a few more snowflakes this afternoon after a misty morning where the marshy areas received more water. But there are no sunny marsh marigolds to brighten the day, but maybe the April showers will bring some May flowers since this month is still lacking any blossoms.

Well at least Mother Nature didn’t play an April Fools Day joke today with more snow, although the forecast does have some snow for later tonight. But the joke is that there still isn’t hint of any spring flowers yet.

It probably is a good thing that there is no hint of spring wildflowers yet, not when the temperature dropped down to 10 degrees overnight and minus zero wind chills. Plus the forecast mentions the s word for several days so more likely to see snowflakes than white blossom petals.

There was a break in the clouds this afternoon, but the sun had a hard time filtering down to the carpet of pink and green. The wild geranium is a native woodland flower and is also seen in road ditches as they grow well in full sun as well as light shade.

The very warm sunny day had the wildflowers opening up to the sunshine on this May Day, even if May baskets filled with flowers is not celebrated like it was in the past.

Another rainy day has the lawn feeling rather squishy and my pond overflowing, but at least all the precipitation has been rain instead of snow, otherwise a deep coating of white would be covering the new emerging white blossoms of the bloodroots.

The calendar says it the first day of spring and the temperature was in the 50s, even if I have a little snow still on the ground. So far no signs of any wildflowers blooming in my woods yet, but hopefully soon instead of white snow there will be white bloodroots.
