The sun is out bright but its rays are not catching the white petals of daisies but only the white flakes of snow which is blanketing the ground.

Although the rain has stopped for today, the sun hasn’t broken through the clouds yet so the yellow flowers in the ditch are providing the only “sun” for the day.

While there are some Lupinus perennis (Wild Lupine) in the state, most of the pretty lupines spotted along the road are the Lupinus polyphyllus (Large-leaved Lupine), a native plant to the Western US but introduced by gardeners to this region. But even though they got loose, they are still pretty.

The field is white, but not white with clovers or daisies since the brilliant white is provided by a layer of snow and ice reflecting the sun instead of open water on a very chilly morning.

The road ditches are displaying yellow colors again, from golden rod to these tall flowers. I believe these are the native plant called Sawtooth Sunflowers but I didn’t climb down into the ditch to check out the leaves since the flowers were sharing the ditch with poison ivy.
