The snow has been settling and compacting in the warmer temperatures but not melting enough to run off. Some rivers and spring fed streams are still flowing but my little pond has settled into its icy blanket.
With the start of winter today, Mother Nature had it snowing on me again. Except the white falling stuff was the hoarfrost blowing off the trees from the coating overnight. And it decorated the Christmas tree with natural flocking until the sun melted it off later in the day.
The late December sun, when it appeared in the clearing skies, was very low to the horizon creating long shadows on the snow. At least soon the sun will start to climb higher in the sky again so that it will reach above the trees.
During the winter, many cabins up north are vacant like this bird house. Although both might have unwanted winter visitors like mice and squirrels attempting to take up residence inside during the cold days.
The snow shovels are getting a workout this month as more snow fell again today. Some of the roads looked like this railroad track with only a single set of tracks cutting through the snow covered road.

Today is the start of meteorological winter, which is the three coldest months of the year. And with the additional snow today, it definitely looks like a white winter.
The weather today kept changing from snow, to freezing rain, to snow pellets, to ice pellets, to sleet and back to snow again. I don’t like the icy stuff, especially in my yard and I rather only see it when it creates the ice formations along Lake Superior.
