I had a rabbit coming near my bird feeder the last few days so I don’t know if it is changing its meal choice to sunflower seeds instead of green stuff.

It was late in the day before the sun finally broke through the clouds and when it did, the butterflies and other insects seemed to become more active. This honey bee was busy gathering pollen on a sunflower before sunset.

These geese look like they are trying to get lined up in formation. Maybe they heard about the parade of tall ships in Duluth tomorrow and they want to be part of the water parade festivities.

The summer flowers are attracting bees and butterflies but I didn’t have my camera while mowing today so I could only watch the giant swallowtail butterfly checking out the blossoms. A few days ago the blazing star flowers were a popular spot for fritillaries and monarchs.

The weather on this summer August was perfect for hiking miles to see waterfalls, like the High Falls on the Baptism River. And you can hike to see more waterfalls upstream and downstream from the big falls on the Baptism River if your feet has a few more steps in them.

On August 7, 1789, the United States Congress approved an act for the “establishment and support of Lighthouse, Beacons, Buoys, and Public Piers.” It was two hundred years later that Congress designated August 7 as National Lighthouse Day which honors the beacon of lights found across America’s shorelines which for hundreds of years symbolized the safety for ships at sea.

The summer butterflies are attracted to the rose pink star shaped blossoms of the Dragon’s Blood Sedum. But as the cooler weather of fall arrives, the pink flowers will turn more red and the foliage turns a bronze red too. And since deer leave them alone, it is probably a groundcover that I should plant at my place.

There seems to be a sibling (and cousin) fight going on at my hummingbird feeder. I have witnessed mid-air body slams occurring between the little ruby-throated hummingbirds. It seems like they have no patience and they can’t take turns drinking at the feeder but I suppose they figure I might forget to fill it and they won’t get any. But next month they will be heading south and gone again until next spring.
