With rain predicted for this evening and tomorrow, this afternoon is a good time to spend some time on the lake trying to catch that elusive big fish.

The beaver bit off a little more than he could chew, but he weaken the tree enough that the park service had to cut it down. I wonder if the beaver got some of the branches when they cut the tree down.

A hundred and fifty two years ago, Mrs. O’Leary’s cow is blamed for starting the Great Chicago Fire. But farther north that same day, another cyclone-like firestorm raged as it destroyed seventeen towns and killed an estimate of 1,500 to 2,500 people, making it the deadliest fire in US history. Besides destroying the towns, over 2 billion trees and 2,400 square miles were burned in the Peshtigo fire,
This historical marker is near the mass grave of 350 victims of the fire, many too charred to identify or no family left alive to identify them.

The sandhill cranes haven’t headed south yet and I saw a couple of them dancing, much like their spring courting ritual, so apparently they have the seasons wrong since it is autumn and not spring.

In parts of my lawn, I mowed more fallen leaves than grass today but they were mostly ash leaves which were brown with just a hint of yellow. It is the maple leaves provide a lot of the orange and red autumn colors.
