Today the classic sound of the Red-winged Blackbird was heard and after a few moments, I spotted the bright red of the wing.

The robins have returned too and I sure hope that their tails don’t need to be snowed on three times before spring arrives as I like the almost snowless winter.

A bluebird was spotted on the weekend, so I cleaned some of my birdhouse today and I found most of the houses occupied with furry squatters. I evicted many single mice and many houses had pairs of mice too and I imagine some are going to try to rebuilt their nests.

The pheasant in my woods has been calling more frequent lately and I scared it into flight when I was walking near my pond. Powerful breast muscles can deliver bursts of power that allow the bird to escape trouble in a hurry by flying nearly vertically into the air and reaching speeds of nearly 40 miles per hour.

With the unusually warm and almost snow free winter so far, March came in like a lamb as the temperatures climbed into the 50s. Hopefully March goes out like a lamb too and not like a lion with a late March blizzard.
